Candidate for Milwaukee County executive on Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin board

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Since Scott Walker was elected governor of Wisconsin, he is no longer Milwaukee County Executive. A special election will be held to fill that open seat. The runoff primary for the Milwaukee County Executive seat is Tuesday, February 15. The general election is Tuesday, April 15.  The county executive race is non-partisan, so party affiliation (ie, if a candidate would identify as Republican, Democrat, Green Party, Independent, etc.) will NOT be listed on the ballot. Do your research if you are going to vote!

Chris Abele, one of the candidates for Scott Walker’s former job, is an emeritus member of the Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin board. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and PolitiFact Wisconsin did an article on Abele, whose “federal donations have helped Wisconsin congressional candidates Russ Feingold, Dave Obey, Steve Kagen and Tammy Baldwin, as well as Paul Wellstone of Minnesota and Michael Bennet of Colorado.”

From Media Trackers:

Milwaukee County Executive candidate Chris Abele and his family’s Argosy Foundation have given tens of thousands of dollars to leftist organizations and candidates in recent years… The Argosy Foundation provided grants of under $20,000 for The Progressive magazine and Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin.

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel calls on “cafeteria Catholics” to step up their abortion support

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

An editorial in today’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel by Ricardo Pimentel (Editorial Page Editor for the MJS) covers a variety of topics popular with bleeding heart liberals — the newly elected Republican majorities in the Wisconsin State Capitol, the importance of fixing the state’s budget woes, and so on.

Pimentel’s main point in his editorial is that defunding Planned Parenthood and defunding taxpayer-provided birth control will only lead to more abortions. Pimentel fails to back up his case with statistics or anything more than a “social justice for all” rant.

I direct this appeal mostly to those who object to abortion – on whatever grounds – but who might realize this is not a zero-sum game. They know that restricting comprehensive sex ed and access to birth control is counterproductive to the goal of making abortion rare. These good people have much in common in this regard with those Rush Limbaugh vilifies as Feminazis.

Yes, I’m talking about you so-called cafeteria Catholics, others who value their faith but don’t necessarily walk in lock step and then those troubled by abortion quite aside from faith. Your gift is that you realize that common sense, faith and objections to abortion need not be canceling propositions. Legislators set to launch assaults on reproductive rights will make a pretense of representing you.

Actually, I think “cafeteria Catholics” know exactly what they’re getting. Hence the attempt to distort the truth. Hence the overwhelming number of Nancy Pelosis in the world — those who claim to be Catholic but are able to separate the infallible truths taught by the Catholic Church with their voting decisions. Pimentel’s interpretation of “common sense” applies to pro-choice Catholics able to ignore the teachings of the Church regarding abortion and contraception. So…. into what category do Catholics who FOLLOW the teachings of the Church fall? Certainly not the relativism category.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel‘s support of Planned Parenthood is no surprise, as we saw this past summer when the MJS wished Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin a very public Happy 75th Birthday”. And sadly, the MJS’s public call for cafeteria Catholics to go all Nancy Pelosi with the Church’s teachings is not much of a surprise either.

Update, 02/09/2011, 11am: As one commenter noted, the Baltimore Catechism of the Catholic Church states, in Part 111:

Q. 554. Could a person who denies only one article of our faith be a Catholic?
A. A person who denies even one article of our faith could not be a Catholic; for truth is one and we must accept it whole and entire or not at all.

Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin to celebrate teenager featured on MTV’s “No Easy Decision” abortion show

Friday, February 4th, 2011
On Dec. 28, MTV aired a half-hour special, “No Easy Decision,” telling the stories of teenagers who had abortions. Watching the show, you can see how abortion continues to affect these women. Read an article by Jill Stanek about her observations here. You can watch the show here on MTV’s website if you haven’t seen it yet.

Fast forward to Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin’s marketing/event planning department. Someone there thought it would be a good idea to celebrate MTV’s show and a post-abortive teenager at the same time! One of the teenagers featured on “No Easy Decision” currently lives in Milwaukee (and is named by PPWI in their marketing of the event).

PPWI will be hosting two screenings of “No Easy Decision” — one in Milwaukee and one in Madison – and PPWI is advertising that the young woman will be in attendance to push abortion.

It is sad beyond belief that this young woman is allowing herself to be used by PPWI. We can only pray for healing for her. As one of the young women said on the show, “I wouldn’t choose abortion as the first option for anybody. It’s the toughest decision ever to make in your life.”

We have seen the aftermath of abortion, and it is truly “no easy decision.” The swath cut by the abortionist’s hand in Milwaukee alone — the suicide of a post-abortive woman, who was a friend to many of us; visibly pregnant 15-year-old girls dragged into abortion clinics by their mothers; unreported statutory rape; women taken away by ambulance from abortion facilities after a botched abortion; a teenage girl stopping to talk to 40 Days for Life volunteers to thank them for being there, saying, “I wish someone was here to offer crisis pregnancy help when I had my abortion.” Pro-lifers in cities across the world can tell these stories, and many more. Abortion hurts women, but you will never see that admission from Planned Parenthood, who makes millions of dollars in profit from hurting women.

Thanks to NARAL for reading!

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin linked to our blog post on The Great Dane on Facebook. Why is this a good thing?
1. NARAL is interested in what we have to say (thanks!)
2. The more people that are exposed to NARAL’s extremism, the better.
3. Does The Great Dane really want to be known as the place NARAL hangs out at? “The Abortion Workers’ Restaurant” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.

Update, 02/03/2011 10:20 am: BelowtheWaist also linked to our blog post and thanked The Great Dane for supporting abortion. Read it here. Again, we ask: Does The Great Dane want to be known as the Abortioneers’ Restaurant?

The Great Dane’s defense of supporting NARAL

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

Another sponsor of NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin’s Roe v. Wade celebration is The Great Dane, a brewery-restaurant with four locations in Madison and one in Wausau.

Great Dane customers, surprised and disappointed to see the name on the list of NARAL event sponsors, contacted the owner to share their disappointment and received the email response below.

This response from The Great Dane is different from how Copps/Roundy’s handled the situation. Copps/Roundy’s admitted the donation was a violation of company policy and will not happen again. In contrast, the owner of The Great Dane is well aware of what NARAL does and stands for; he supports that wholeheartedly. Great Dane patrons need to be aware of what the money spent in Great Dane establishments supports — NARAL’s abortion agenda.

We are posting this response for two reasons. One, think about how you would defend this pro-life position in this situation. Read the rationale and understand the mentality that many people have for justifying their support of NARAL or Planned Parenthood. Two, whether you are a former, current or future customer of The Great Dane, know that you have options while in the Madison area — there are plenty of businesses to patronize that don’t bankroll clandestine abortions for 15-year-olds, aborting disabled babies or perpetuate the fallacy that abortion is safer than childbirth.

Dear ,

Thanks you for taking the time to contact The Great Dane about your concerns over our donation of a $50 gift certificate to NARAL Wisconsin. I am saddened by your decision not to patronize our businesses anymore. The Great Dane is a generous supporter of community organizations of all types, maybe the most generous of any business in Dane County if you look at our donations versus our revenues. Our biggest contributions go to organizations like, Big Brother & Big Sisters ($10,000), Madison Children’s Museum ($6,500) , United Way ($4,500), and LOTS more. If you choose not to patronize The Great Dane, that is your decision and I respect it, but it seems pretty short sighted to litmus test The Great Dane the way you have. What other people/businesses will you cut out of your life on the basis of one issue? That slope can get pretty slippery. I spoke with a gentleman who was upset by our gift to NARAL and he asked me to make a gift to Elizabeth House. The Great Dane is happy to do so. The issue of abortion is contentious and brings out strong emotions. But I was taught to respect people of good will who disagree with me, like the gentleman who I spoke with earlier. Please understand that womens’ rights and allowing individuals not governments to decide what we do with their own bodies are valid issues too.

Sincerely,
Eliot Butler
President, The Great Dane Pub & Brewing Company

If you do contact The Great Dane, PLEASE BE COURTEOUS AND POLITE.

Our 2010 annual report is now online!

Wednesday, February 2nd, 2011

We posted our first-ever annual report on our website (thanks to development director Steve Karlen for spearheading this project!). We’re really proud of everything we accomplished in 2010, and you’ll be amazed when you read our year in review. We also think you’ll be proud to be a part of our Pro-Life Wisconsin team.

In 2010 we made tremendous progress toward building a Culture of Life in Wisconsin. The efforts of Pro-Life Wisconsinites from Lake Superior to Kenosha are responsible for bringing the total protection message to thousands of families throughout the state. Educational materials, print and broadcast advertisements, letters to the editor, calls and emails to legislators, and a strong presence at parades, fairs and other community events proclaimed the sanctity of life from conception to natural death. These efforts have borne great fruit!

What all is covered in the annual report that you need to read?
-  Something unique happened every single month;
-  How we’re educating Wisconsin;
- Our comprehensive print resources;
- The True to Life Media Campaign;
- Our Speakers Bureau;
- Our investigative research;
- The Sharon Schumer Memorial Scholarship rewarding high school seniors for their pro-life activities;
- Our Pro-Life Wisconsin affiliates located throughout the state;
